Exerpt from the Introduction

“Printing My First Book” is not intended as a guide to help you write or formulate the contents of your book, or to tell you how to use Microsoft Word or Quark Xpress correctly to design it. It is simply intended as a guide to help you understand how your book will be printed and bound to give you a final product that you are happy with for a cost effective price. As a graphic designer with over 12 years experience, I have met many authors who have written and designed some excellent books, but who have little or no idea about how to begin producing them. These pages will explain in a straigtforward and jargon free way how your book will become a physical reality, with insights into digital print technology, desk top publishing and the selection and application of an appropriate binding. This booklet does not pretend to be a definitive work on the preparation, printing and binding of books, but to provide an insight only, for the author.

This book is an 67pp A6 perfect bound book, printed duplex on 120gsm uncoated “Colourtech” paper, with a 4/0 matte laminated colour cover on 300gsm uncoated board. The book pages were printed from a High Resolution (300dpi) CMYK Acrobat PDF with crop marks, made in Adobe InDesign, and were printed on an Ikon 650 Colour Digital Press, with the covers printed on a Canon CLC5151 to ensure that the laminate took properly. It was bound on a Horizon perfect binder. So, how much of that did you understand? If you were given that information, could you produce a book from it?This is the kind of information I employ every working day and explaining this process to people who haven’t got the first clue about printing or bookbinding can be time consuming and mutually confusing. Some Degree students who are studying Graphic Design have shown little or no awareness of this essential knowledge, even though they have produced some fantastic works of art or great pieces of literature. In my opinion, understanding colour, how to artwork a job correctly and how to print a job correctly are just as important as the ability to create a stunning piece of Art or Design, and quite often a badly printed and bound book can substantially detract from the intended impact of the work.If you are a budding author, a student who needs to produce a book/thesis for your degree, or you are working on a book for some other reason, read on and learn all you need to help you turn your vision into a well produced publication.
