The first non-religious Book about God
A Book about the Spiritual Truth of Human Existence
Harmful lies
Being lied to has been one of my most unpleasant experiences in life; and I’m talking
about the kind of lies that cause harm. Over the years I’ve had various encounters
with people who lie habitually for various reasons. There are those who seem to lie
compulsively, based on some self esteem issues. These persons would make up stories
about themselves as a form of self aggrandisement. After finding out I would be angry
for a while but as time passes by these experiences become funny stories. One
particular such liar listed so many things he had done that for it to be true he would
have to be twice the age he was. The lies that cause harm rarely become funny because
these experiences can affect a fundamental need we all have, which is to trust. A man
I know once told me he was angry for two years after he found out some religious
story he believed wasn’t true even though he wasn’t a devotee by any stretch of the
imagination.
Over the years I’ve had a few experiences with harmful liars and therefore I’ve
become a bit sensitive about the subject. Now I’ve become aware that the most
insidious lies are those that have official status because these can affect the course of
history, and in the process, billions of people. Unfortunately there are many among us
who love power to the point where they would do anything to achieve it. These are
highly trained and motivated individuals who become skilled at manipulating and
controlling people. They understand human psychology and use this to their
advantages. There are those who are in powerful positions within religions who know
the truth but will not talk themselves out of a job. I believe the majority spread lies
because of ignorance.
Even though I’ve come to hate harmful lies, it has been necessary for me to take a
philosophical attitude towards those who lie and this attitude has to be extended
towards institutional lies. There are various institutions that are determined to
maintain organised lies that have been in place before the birth of anyone alive today.
I take the view that life is filled with contrasts, and there are preys and there are
predators. Just as in the natural world where preys instinctively do everything possible
not to be a victim, so must we in the human world defend ourselves against being
manipulated and becoming victims of those who desire power and an easy life. We
learn to accept that there are good and bad people and every shade in between. This is
not something to become frustrated about. However we can aim to minimise the bad
through our system of parenting and schooling... Devon Morgan
