Concepts for Health Management

The purpose of this book is to bridge identified gaps between policies made out of political rhetoric and practical strategic concepts for developing and delivering specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and timed healthcare services across Nigeria. Further, it sets to challenge and introduce a change process in support of the reforms in the healthcare industry in order to move away from a mono-focus medical model for diagnosis and treatment to a holistic business strategic model for managing a viable healthcare system through health needs analysis, cost efficiency and value added notion, workforce planning, recruitment and development, resource procurement, productivity and total quality management.

In respect of the fact that many countries healthcare strategies are developed from issues and challenges that are unique to them, this book has been written from outcome of critical analysis of fundamental issues and concerns in Nigeria, which are multifaceted. The book strongly highlighted barriers for good quality health and higher life expectancy in Nigeria, most of which revolve around custom and cultural values, religion, misinformation and misguided western values. There are also the issues about disjointed professional and inter-agency relationships and duty of care to the public/healthcare service users with regards to funding and resource management, services delivery and workforce/professionals accountabilities.

The book principally projects the development of a sustainable healthcare system that will ensure a proactive leadership and management structures in all institutions of healthcare sector, which would encourage public empowerment for accessing healthcare services, demand for quality care, challenge competencies of service providers and to complain and receive response for dissatisfaction. Further, it has political perception to policy development by drawing from experiences of some countries in Europe, especially United Kingdom, and other places like USA, Australia, South Africa and Brazil.

Academics and people studying management courses would benefit massively from this book and those with career interest in health services management would find the contents of the book extremely relevant. This book will no doubt set the pace for many writers and publishers of healthcare management concepts that will be unique to the socio-cultural, political and economic challenges in Nigeria.

The Author

David Eboh is a graduate of Health Services Management from University of East London. He obtained his MBA from the Business School of the same University. He also has Postgraduate Diploma from the University of Greenwich as Lecturer. His post secondary education started from University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin City Nigeria. He is the Chief Executive of Mebod Management Consultancy Ltd. He is a Member of the Institute of Healthcare Management, and affiliate member of Chartered Institute of Personnel Management.

He was a Project Manager, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Woolwich London; Lecturer and Liaison Course Coordinator, University Hospital Lewisham and King’s College, University of London, and former Executive Director of Pro-Briggs Associates Ltd, UK.

He is a regular writer of articles on healthcare and socio-political issues, with publications such as: National Health Insurance Scheme, just a popular name or a model for realistic change in healthcare delivery in Nigeria. Also, he is the author of: Nigeria: a journey in the dark cloud.

Mr Eboh is presently a Law student at London South Bank University, England. 2007-2008.
