“I just received your chapbook in the mail, and I must say I am stunned-your poems hit me like a fist in the gut, literally knocking the breath out of me. Beautiful! I’ve read it about six times so far, I can’t put it down. Thank you so much for such beautiful words.”

Suliatu Bello

“Dante’s poems are memorable, moving, fresh and necessary. The combination of his ear for that voice, his eye for that life, his intrinsic sense of music and the line, the heart wrenching lyric imagery and the rage that ought to fuel it all and does makes his poems sure things.”

'Keep writing your great poems man. You are hitting the keys like a symphony by Wagner, Bach, and Mozart. You are one of the few poets I can honestly say I take joy in reading.'

Adrian Brown

Dante’s writing is insightful, soulful and mature beyond his years, a testament to the complex sometimes-tumultuous experiences his life has offered as inspiration. His emotive language and colourful rich vivid imagery coupled with relevant, contemporary themes makes his work absorbing and entices you to read on and on the journey with him”

Dante’s poetry cozes impetuous and spontaneous question of life’s many mysteries. It’s unassuming and guileless, making the reader an active participant in his quest to understand that around him. It’s thought provoking with being controversial and ofcourse like many of his ilk, his love poems are among the best works.

Dante’s observations are vexatious to the spirit. He asks difficult questions, by so doing stirs, and ignites something special in the hearts of his peers. If he were a musician he’d top the chart daily, but the message would be lost in the music – remember ‘Tuapc Amaru Shakur? It can only be a deep feeling of love, for All humanity, that can inspire a young man such as himself to walk his chosen path’

Back cover text

Colours of My Life – Daniel “Dante” Bello’s first book of poetry published by TamaRe House is a cycle of eventful journeys, monologues and lyrics that celebrates his zest for life, love and humanity in the form of the spoken word.

Dante...

“Many of these poems are real experiences of my life. In solitude spaces I quest for the fulfilment of celebrating life through poetry. They depict all my struggles, pains, defeats, victories and triumphs into painted circumstances as ‘words of colours’ that describe my life journey.

These words create a composite portrait of how my life transcended from the war ravaged Sierra Leone to the refugee camp in Nigeria, then onto South Africa. These experiences have influenced my own perception of self. The poems demonstrate what we have in common as humans; what divides us from self, the pain of losing a mother, separations from family, and those we love and those we dislike.

‘Colours of My Life’ reveals ageless psyche of daily discoveries of our selves; the exploration of love, nature, learning to meet people and, envisioning how love, spirituality, and memories shapes what it means to be human. These experiences are the different colours that make our being a beautiful soul as we evolve with every passing second of our lives.”

Excerpts

“Agnostic Love”

Agnostic in my heart in search for true love

Pragmatic in my mind about what love really is

Satirical with my emotions to trust again

I am floating in my thoughts as the sound of your voice echoes in my ears

The scent of your body is embalm on my pillows

Salient and ruthlessly you axed away my love for you

You pierce my heart with a burning spear when you walk out of my life unannounced

Gauging and lobbying myself to open up again but the fear of being hurt steers at me daily

Like legions of disgruntled pieces your face is shattered in my soul

I am quelling my tears in silence but like a tirade of inferno, the pain is hard to put out

The acrimony of love is now my proxy to letting go.

“Hope”

I stand alone in despairs

Waiting to find myself again

Hope smiles at me.

I cry all night

Thinking, tomorrow will never come

Hope woke me up and say '' it’s a new day''.

I lay down in my bed all day

Trying to find answers to my questions

Hope stood by me and hold me tight.

I shut myself from friends and loved ones

Blaming myself for losing you

Hope takes my hand and embrace me.

In my solitude space

Tears like raindrops welling down my eyes

Hope dries my tears.

The hateful words you said to me

Cuts me deep wide open

Hope heals me.

Weakened by my soul’s tears

You thought you had broken me

Hope is my anchor.

Into this new day so warm and bright

I Hope

Leaving behind my past.

I Hope

Embracing my now

I Hope

Up from my pains and fears

I Hope

In Hope I rise.

“Fairy Child”

I am the fairy child

A child of ancient tales

Tales from the motherland

I am the child of true independence

My identity has become blemish by fossils of my past

Deep within me I know who I am

I am the son of the rising sun

I am the moon that shines in the horizon

My heritage is unbecomingly me

My creed I can’t foretell

My future is unbeknown

I am the now

Deep within my soul I search to know who I am

I am the mist within the clouds

In my shadow I can see through my inner man

I am the replica of my generation

A Rubicon ruby

My beauty disappears as I search for my true identity

My identity lingers from generations to generations

I am the lost son of the motherland

A son longing for a father figure

I am my own father

The turmoil of life has made me the man I am today

I am nurtured by life’s experiences and circumstances

I am the son on a journey on the plains of life

A journey of true discovery

Life is my trail

I am the fairy child.

“Web of Lies”

Webs of lies

Serenading between love and obsessions

Shadows and doubts frowning down before me

Watching angels drown, waiting to fly

Share your blanket with me cos it’s cold outside and inside

I see you bleeding in the dark when the last lie drops and we remain hidden in the web of lies.
